The 3rd Australian International Martial Arts Culture Festival was grandly held at Box Hill Aqualink Sports Centre, Melbourne
Co-hosted by Australia Dongwu Tai Chi Alliance and AWCC Australian Wushu Culture Centre, the event gathered renowned martial artists at home and abroad. It attracted over 300 individual entries, thousands of participants and spectators, as well as 56 participating teams. As Australia’s top-tier and most influential professional international martial arts event this year, it aims to boost folk cultural exchanges between China and Australia via martial arts. Supported by the Chinese Consulate-General in Melbourne, the festival received full coverage from mainstream media at home and abroad, including Melbourne authoritative radio stations, ethnic TV stations and Australian Chinese Newspaper, greatly expanding its public influence.
1. Event Overview Hosted from May 8 to 11, 2026, the festival invited Yu Gongbao as Honorary Chairman and Wendy Jiang Hui as Organizing Committee Chairperson in charge of overall planning and execution.
The 3rd Australia International Martial Arts Culture Festival was held in Melbourne from May 8 to 11, 2026. Co-hosted by Australia Dongwu Tai Chi Alliance and Australia World Culture Center (AWCC), the tournament appointed Yu Gongbao as Honorary Chairman and Wendy Jiang as Chairperson, who took charge of the overall planning, organization and on-site execution. The event received strong support from the Chinese Consulate General in Melbourne.
Adhering to the mission of “Friendship via Martial Arts, Cross-border Integration and Martial Spirit Inheritance”, the festival followed the principles of fairness, impartiality and openness. Open to martial arts enthusiasts worldwide, the event attracted over 300 individual contestants and thousands of participants and spectators. Covering all age groups with diverse competition categories, the tournament offered a total prize pool of AU$30,000. The champions, runners-up and second runners-up of the King of Kings group event and individual events were awarded AU$4,000, AU$2,000 and AU$1,000 respectively.
The event boasted a distinguished and professional lineup of guests, including senior experts and renowned martial arts masters from across China.
The official opening ceremony of the Martial Arts Culture Festival was held on May 9th, hosted by Li Chao, editor-in-chief of Taiji.com.
II. Opening Ceremony: Gathering of Martial Arts Masters with Standard Procedures
Wendy Jiang, Chairperson of Australia Dongwu Tai Chi Alliance and the Tournament Committee, delivered the welcome speech. She expressed gratitude to contestants, guests and cooperating institutions at home and abroad. She stated that the event would unite local martial arts forces in Australia, build a sustainable international exchange platform, and further promote the dissemination of Chinese martial arts overseas.
Liu Hongqi, Founder of TaiChi Network, traveled from Wen County, China to attend the ceremony. He pointed out that Tai Chi, carrying traditional Chinese philosophy and health preservation culture, serves as an excellent medium for cross-cultural communication. He highly recognized Wendy Jiang’s long-term efforts in popularizing Tai Chi and Chinese martial arts in Australia, affirming her contribution to building a bridge for China-Australia cultural exchanges.
Yang Qiyuan, Former Vice Chairman of the Chinese Wushu Association, stated that high-standard overseas martial arts tournaments are vital for the international promotion of Chinese martial arts. This cultural festival creates favorable conditions for cultural communication between Chinese and foreign people, helping Chinese martial arts take root in Australia’s multicultural environment and enhancing people-to-people and cultural integration.
Ge Chunyan, inheritor of Baguazhang, gave a Baguazhang performance;
Fu Qingquan, direct inheritor of Yang-style Tai Chi, demonstrated Yang-style Tai Chi;
Xu Qinlan, master of Chen-style Tai Chi and Dean of Dongwu Training Institute, presented Chen-style Tai Chi Fan.
With standardized movements and elegant charm, the performances fully demonstrated the unique beauty of Chinese martial arts which combines hardness and softness, winning wide acclaim from the audience. After the demonstration, the 3rd Australia International Martial Arts Culture Festival officially commenced.
III. Tournament Organization: Professional Referees & Complete Competition System
To ensure professionalism, impartiality and standardization, the organizing committee established a multi-level authoritative judging panel. The conventional martial arts competition panel consisted of Ge Chunyan, Fu Qingquan, Xu Qinlan, together with local Australian martial arts masters Shen Yi and Lin Hao. Li Chao served as the Chief Referee, implementing unified judging criteria to standardize procedures and guarantee fair competition for all contestants.
For special competition categories, an independent professional judging team was specially invited. Su Junxi, former Chairman of Victorian Chinese Community Federation (2014-2020), acted as Chief Referee for special events. Du Liyuan, former choreographer of Beijing Military Region Art Troupe, together with certified international martial arts referees, formed the judging team to ensure the artistic quality, professionalism and impartiality of the events.
The competition covered diverse events, including Tai Chi, Health Qigong and traditional martial arts. Competitions were finely divided by age and group, covering children, young adults and elderly participants. Open to martial arts enthusiasts at home and abroad, the tournament provided a professional display and communication platform for practitioners at all levels.
All on-site arrangements including venue decoration, guest reception, process coordination and tournament implementation were completed voluntarily by core members of Australia Dongwu Tai Chi Alliance and participating team members.
A total of 17 sponsors set up booths during the opening ceremony, providing workplace injury legal consultation, tax consultation, health physiotherapy and free traditional Chinese medical diagnosis. In addition, sponsors travelling from China brought exquisite trendy blind boxes for children on site.
All staff worked on a voluntary basis without remuneration. They sacrificed their personal preparation and rest time, staying up late repeatedly to refine every organizational detail.
IV. Awards & Achievements: Brilliant Competition and Cultural Performance
The cultural festival integrated professional martial arts competitions and traditional cultural exhibitions. High-level contests were held for the King of Kings Group Event, Men’s Individual Event and Women’s Individual Event. Competitors showcased their skills in intense and highly entertaining matches.
Ranking was determined strictly in accordance with professional scoring standards, with champions, runners-up and second runners-up selected in each category.
The tournament set considerable cash prizes. Awarded athletes stepped onto the official podium to receive honorary certificates, along with cash prizes of AU$4,000, AU$2,000 and AU$1,000 for champion, runner-up and second runner-up respectively.
